Other alopecias

1. OTHER ALOPECIASDIFFUSE :

  • Anagen effluvium : temporary hair loss due to chemotherapy (cancer), or other treatments or medications. In general the hair grows back after stopping the treatment which causes the effluvium.

 

2. OTHER ALOPECIAS, LOCALISED :

 

  • Pseudo-pelade : this scarring alopecia causes the destruction of the follicles and the permanent loss of hair in the areas affected on the scalp.

a) Exogenous causes :

 - Central centrifugal alopecia caused by aggressive hairdressing habits (use of relaxers or straighteners, hard dyes ...); it mainly affects African women, and may be associated with traction alopecia, Solutions: stop the use of aggressive products, topical treatment of dermocorticoids.

 - Radiotherapy, burns, surgical operations (scars), for which grafting can often be a solution.

 

b) Endogenous causes : lichen, frontal fibrosing alopecia, lupus, varicella, herpes zoster, acne keloid (treatments appropriate to each case)

 

  • Traction alopecia : due to hair pulling by to too tight hairstyles (chignon, ponytail, braids, cornrows..) or too heavy (extensions, additions), sometimes associated with clamps, chemical straighteners. Common in African women, where the most affected areas are the temples, the edge of the forehead, the sides and the back of the head. This alopecia is in some cases reversible (stopping the cause), otherwise a hair transplant is recommended.

  • Trichotillomania : compulsive uprooting (nervous tics) of the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes. Psychological therapy, or grafting in case of serious damage.
